Drug Rehabs in South Jersey: Drug Addiction and Rehab in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania has long been known for its historical monuments and unfortunately problems with drug and alcohol addiction. Due to the increase in drug trafficking activity in the early nineties Drug Enforcement Agencies and law enforcement officials established certain areas of Pennsylvania as a high intensity drug trafficking area, covering specifically Philadelphia and Camden, New Jersey.

The Drug Enforcement Administration reports any of the state’s problems with drug and alcohol addiction result from Hispanic and African-American groups with large established networks spread out across the state. These organized drug traffickers receive and distribute narcotics throughout Pennsylvania via Philadelphia and other locations.

Although crack and powder cocaine account for the majority of federal drug related arrests, heroin is a constant problem in Pennsylvania usually made abundant via South American drug cartels. Heroin drug traffickers continually seek new customers in Pennsylvania’s smaller towns and rural areas. Heroin treatment admissions did account for over 14% of Pennsylvania’s drug rehab admissions in 2006 with 20.8 Kilos being confiscated by the Drug Enforcement Administration.

As mentioned earlier cocaine is the primary drug of abuse in Pennsylvania as heroin treatment admissions and drug arrests pale in comparison. 739 kilograms were seized by federal law enforcement officials and agencies during 2007 with 44% of those arrested being arrested for and charged with possession of the drug. Cocaine, both powder and crack cocaine is by far the most popular and abused drug in Pennsylvania.

Marijuana comes in third accounting for nearly ten percent federal drug arrestees in 2006 with state police drug detection teams seizing 377,856 grams that same year. Federal drug seizures were responsible for capturing 571.5 Kilograms of marijuana in 2007. Admissions to Pennsylvania drug rehab centers are rising as with are states across the country. Those states with relaxed medical marijuana laws are experiencing as much as on average a 30% increase in marijuana rehab treatment admissions.

Methamphetamine addiction and abuse have declined significantly with primary areas of abuse being in the Philadelphia area. Clandestine meth lab incidents peaked in 2004 at 106 then dropped over the next three years to eleven. Mexican drug cartels are keeping meth addicts supplied with trans-shipments arriving to and from Philadelphia as well.

Addicts seeking help in Pennsylvania rehab programs have three methods of addiction treatment to choose from. About 95% of the treatment options available in the Commonwealth are the 12 step drug rehab centers. Other treatment programs available are the long-term no-denominational Christian based programs that average anywhere from 12-18 months in length. The longer the better when it comes to successful rehabilitation and treatment.
