Does Coming From a Rough Background (Foster Care, Drug Addiction, Etc.) Help You Get Accepted Into Colleges?

Question by Jon Kris: Does coming from a rough background (foster care, drug addiction, etc.) help you get accepted into colleges?
I am specifically concerned with schools such as Harvard, University of Michigan, Yale, etc. I plan to transfer from a community college with my Associates and finish my undergrad at a prestigious university. I hope to have a 4.0 and have completed some community service. I have went through foster care, recovered from drug addiction, and dropped out of high school. I got my GED, and I have been attending a community college for two semesters; both of which I have received all 4.0’s. Is my background a pro or a con in getting into an Ivy league school?

If you showed that you were willing to recover (aka your GED) they will look at that, not your bad history. If you were a “bad” kid then they will evaluate whether you have finally grown up and are trying to get yourself educated, or whether you are just doing it because someone told you to.
