How Can I Find a Psychiatrist in Mineola, NY Area That Does Addiction Treatment?

Question by B333: How can I find a psychiatrist in Mineola, NY area that does addiction treatment?
One of my good friends is currently depressed and she has recently picked up on the habit of using opiates to self-medicate. Her family feels helpless and has requested that I help them out. The thing is that she refuses to go to inpatient drug rehab, partially because she is not willing to give up work and school in order to go do inpatient. Another thing with her is that she is currently taking psychiatric medications, which have been prescribed to her a while ago, but she is no longer under a psychiatrists supervision to monitor the drugs and better treat her depression.

Given all this mess, I was thinking that her first bet would be to see a psychiatrist that specializes in drug addiction treatment. I know they are out there, but what makes this search really hard is that she has HIP Medicaid, so it has to be an addiction specialist psychiatrist who accepts HIP medicaid insurance. I contacted her insurance company and they said my only option is to search for provider psychiatrists in his area through their web site and then call them one by one to see which ones accept her insurance. As you might have guessed, a lot of doctors come up in the search. Calling them one by one is a really tough job, especially because most of them go on voicemail and they take a while to call you back. I was wondering if there is an easier way to go about finding this doctor.

Thank you,

B.
PS Please refrain from giving unrelated advice (e.g. she should really go to inpatient). While I’d appreciate your potential concern, my question at this point is about finding that specific type of doctor, not finding out what the best way to go would be.

There is no other way, besides word of mouth, or getting recommendations from others who all have their own agenda.
It might be better to ask at AA or narcanon where the people all know the psychiatrists and what they are like.

Adderall vs Ritalin – What medication to choose for ADHD? – Psychiatrist Dr. Edward Fruitman, MD, Medical Director of Trifecta Health Medical Center, explains the differences between ADD/ ADHD Medications: Adderall and Ritalin. Often Dr. Fruitman is asked” How do you know what medication to choose?” Here is some insight to the thought process behind choosing the right medication for you! Both Ritalin and Adderall belong in the same stimulant category. Once key factor in choosing, is the patients preference and attitude toward each drug. If a person doesn’t take their medicine, it can’t work! It is also important to know the patients previous history with each of the drugs. Typically, Dr. Fruitman says, it is best to start on a low dose in an extended release form, and Adderall may be best for motivation purposes, while Ritalin may be a better choice for over-stimulation. Both of these drugs have proven effective in treating ADD/ ADHD. The most important thing to consider while deciding a course of treatment, is finding the right dose range.
