How to Become a Police Officer?

Question by Don: How to Become a Police Officer?
I am a 26 year old Male. I have a Bachelor’s of Science in Psychology from a respectable school. I also live in Illinois. I have been thinking about applying to become a cop and would like to work my way up to detective. However, about 6 years ago I went through an experimental phase in college. I tried some drugs, Marijuana about 7 times, Cocaine 2 times, and Mushrooms 1 time. Will this disqualify me? I have not done any of these things since and am worried that this will put me out of the running. I now have a steady job and did work as a psychiatric technician in a residential treatment center for troubled kids under DCFS custody. I ran group therapy sessions on drug abuse, depression, anger, and life skills. I know the past drug use will be a black mark on my application and that Illinois administers a lie detector test. I am not going to lie about it on the application. Will the fact that I am honest about it, that it was so long ago and that I later was actively advocating and helping teens to stop their drug use help my chances?
