My Tenant Got Arrested for Dealing Drugs in His Apartment. What Will Happen?
Question by Geoff Moldenhauer: My tenant got arrested for dealing drugs in his apartment. What will happen?
I live in Minneapolis, Minnesota. A few months ago, my wife rented out her apartment to a guy nearby in Hopkins. Now he got arrested for dealing drugs in her apartment. The Apartment Manager asked her if she did a background on him and she said she didn’t. She told her that she’s in trouble now. I looked up the MN law regarding this and it does say that she is required to perform a background check on potential tenants. What are the consequences of not performing this check? What’s going to happen to us?

So what happens if you do the check and see that the person is a drug dealer and you rent to them anyway? Also, was this a sub-lease of an apartment that your wife was renting? Asking because there is mention of the apartment manager.
I doubt she is in any real trouble. Even had she done a check, there may not have been any information and the tenant could still have gotten arrested. As long as nobody was injured due to the tenant dealing drugs, there shouldn’t be any ramifications to your wife. No harm, no foul.
