Signs of Drug Abuse: 7 Signs of Drug Abuse in Teens
As every parent of older children knows, there’s not much rhyme or reason to teens’ behavior, so detecting signs of drug abuse can be hard. One day a teen may be just as sweet and loving as they were when they were 5 years old, and the next day they may be completely withdrawn and unaffectionate. For parents, teens’ strange and inconsistent behavior can be disconcerting because you never know if it’s normal teen growing pains or something deeper.
If you suspect that drug abuse may be an issue with your teen, try to see the big picture. Some rebelliousness and emotional volatility are normal, but if your teen exhibits at least few of these signs of drug abuse, then it could add up to a serious problem.
Verbal or physical abuse: Has your teen become just plain mean? If he or she has been verbally, emotionally, or physically abusive to you or any siblings, this could signal drug abuse.
Different friends: Most kids lose and make new friends on a regular basis, but if your child’s entire social circle has changed in a short period, make sure you take stock of who these new friends are.
Secretiveness: Most teens are secretive, but if your child consistently evades your routine questions, this could signal that he or she is engaging in bad behaviors.
Persistent lying: Many parents have a sixth sense for recognizing when their children are lying. If your intuition tells you your teen is not being honest with you, you might want to take a closer look at his or her activities.
Interest in counterculture: There’s nothing wrong with being out of the mainstream, but if your teen seems very interested in cultural movements that have been associated with drug use, then you might want to be on the lookout for other signs of drug abuse.
Disrespect: Drug-using teens often get into bad habits when it comes to relating with their parents. If your teen has recently started treating you disrespectfully, take this as a sign that something deeper is going on.
Lack of interest in activities: Kids involved in drug abuse often lose interest in activities that they used to enjoy.
